Today, we will discuss types of work teams and how the type of team serves the focus or facilitates the interests for which the team was created.

The Natural Team

A natural work team involves all of the individuals in a certain work group who share responsibility for a work product. Team members have shared work which could not or should not be done by someone working independently. Team members sometimes cross-train and learn from each other.

The Directed Team

A directed team is a natural work team that also has critical phases or resources

coordinated by management. These teams have a commitment to a common approach

to their work. Members of this team will collectively manage their business relationships

with other individuals and teams in the organization. Some of these activities could

include budgeting, hiring, or scheduling.

The Process Team

A process team are all of those who share responsibility for monitoring, controlling, or developing a process or set of activities. Members of this team may work on other teams or rotate through other activities. This team may be temporary or seasonal.

The Management Team

A management team is only a real team if every member represents one or more interdependent functions or processes. Strategic coordination and setting priorities are the key performance indicators for this team and its members. The outcomes this team is looking for are achieving desired results, and doing it with an efficient use of resources for long-term sustainability.

If any group does not have common ways of working together, interdependent work, shared goals, or shared responsibilities, then the group cannot be called a team. Now, you should understand how to help your employees by placing them in the right team that is designed to facilitate their change and their success.
