There are three keys to success for virtual teams:
Developing leadership of the team to get balanced and accurate input and use it to move decisions forward. If you think of a process tree or list of tasks that all have to get accomplished in order to get a job done, you will realize most of the slow downs happen around decision making. If you can make a decision earlier in a process, you can sometimes get better and faster results.
Developing skills and processes to communicate information and to make decisions. Managers need to be able to connect with customers, vendors, and employees across multiple channels, devices, and platforms. Developing these skills and processes allows you to manage projects inside of time and budget constraints.
Developing shared goals and methods to achieve outcomes. Highlighting shared goals for your team will increase support and decrease wasted activity. The critical success factors here are the working relationships among the team and how productive they are in producing the end results that the team needs.
