Promote Excellence To Get Excellent Results

Updated: Mar 12, 2023

Are you able to identify exceptional employees when you see them?

Here are the keys to finding the rising stars in your company and letting them shine!

You cannot find them using traditional techniques because they are unlike conventional employees. They have a pattern of achievement that is consistently above average. No one is perfect; however, managers can spot the gifted ones by their work and achievement over time. Even the best interviewers need to ask the right questions and observe essential patterns to predict a job candidate's potential for future success.

Use these signs about a candidate's past success patterns in order to promote or hire a fantastic team member.

Past Success Sign #1: High achievers will grow and learn faster than others

Are you interviewing someone who has been promoted more often than average? Do you have a team member who takes on more complex and more important work compared to others? Did they take opportunities for advanced training or stretch roles?

Past Success Sign #2: Intrinsically motivated to do great things

Highly motivated people will have gone the extra mile on more than one occasion. Ask them how they took initiative to go above and beyond and ask them why they did it. This could demonstrate what their motivations are. Also, be aware of how their motivations fit well with the job you want this person to do. A career full of lateral transfers is an indicator of someone who does not want the challenge. Workers who have unusual gifts will be inspired and will have no problems sharing their insights and will want to move up and implement them. Find out what they aim to do and give them an opportunity to enhance their skill set.

Past Success Sign #3: They have an outstanding team or are versatile collaborators

Ask about what teams they were on that were cross-functional and find out how they describe the people on their team. Get them to reveal what their strengths are and how they can be used to support team objectives.

Past Success Sign #4: They were rehired or referred

Many people make referrals; however, if someone has worked with them by choice more than once, then it was probably for a good reason. It is a good sign if an outside consultant can show that they have had repeat business from customers and clients over time. Oftentimes, talented people have worked for an old boss more than once, or been rehired at the same company because the strategic talent gap was never filled.

Use these signs to recognize when you are looking at a star employee, and make a smart hire or promotion. Executives are continually looking to the future to decide what resources should be committed to future projects, and human resources should not be overlooked. When there is a lack of commitment from upper management to strategically manage HR processes, it leads to ineffective operations and poor performance. If you want excellent performance, you must integrate excellent people into your organization and use them as key leaders in projects and initiatives.

Your Next Challenge: To be the best you can be!

Now that you have considered these ideas, how can you put them into practice?

These insights could be your key to success!
