It's Not Easy Being Green

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

We are determined to implement more green and sustainable ways of doing business for UMI Group LLC. You too, should walk through the green door.

The rise of energy considerations

In recent years, we have seen the proliferation of programs and policies intended to drive environmental sustainability. The rise of energy considerations has had an impact on business and industry through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate resiliency while accelerating economic growth, creating jobs, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. There has been prioritization of cutting carbon pollution, including moves to reduce the use of gas and or diesel vehicles. There have been efforts made by the government to incentivize cleaner heating technologies and to attach green strings to subsidies for businesses. Climate action was notable in the top priorities for politicians in recent election cycles. Even those who are uninterested in the rest of the planet, are still looking for cheap and secure sources of energy. While it doesn't make sense for every business to throw a stake in the ground on green issues, it would be prudent to increase awareness of broader economic and political implications. Environmental concerns are among the public's top priorities, and with Michigan's comparative advantage in location, engineering, and universities, every day Michiganders are investing far less than they should in green technologies and more sustainable ways of living.

Our Recycling Activity

This year, we participated in recycling programs for our office printers. This means waste materials can be recycled and reused instead of dumped into landfills. While our business does not see a direct financial benefit from this activity, we believe that it is a necessary action for the mutual benefit of ourselves, our community, and the planet. There are always naysayers when discussing sustainable business; however, sustainability is a strategy with a longer horizon than any other. Therefore, sustainable strategies are always the most potentially profitable. Plans and implementation goals should be feasible in the short term and sustainable in the long term.

The Five R's

The five R’s can be implemented by any individual or business, and have economic benefits far beyond environmental considerations. Think about how these ecological strategies can work for you in your business environment:

  • Reduce waste

  • Reuse resources

  • Recycle materials

  • Refuse to initiate or participate in activities that undermine long-term sustainability

  • Repair and rebuild activities may provide for the appreciation of your assets
